Appointments

Making an appointment: Appointment are preferred. To make an appointment, click on "Make an Appointment" on the left-hand side of this page. Appointment dates that are full will not be shown on the online scheduling system. Only open slots are able to be selected. While appointments are preferred, each clinic will also be open to walk-ins. Please see our walk-in policy below.

Walk-in policy: Walk-ins will be fit in only if time permits (i.e. if there is a cancellation or open appointment, or if we have extra volunteers). If you come to a clinic without an appointment, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to prepare your return that day. If you do walk-in, please come at one of our listed appointment times. We will not accept any walk-ins within 1 hour of our closing time. If possible, please make an appointment.

Other tax prep options: You may log on to our FREE website to file your taxes on your own (see the bottom of this page for more information). Alternatively, you may contact the COMPASS VITA site in Chapel Hill at www.orangecountyvita.org.

Arrive on time: The estimated standard time for preparing a return is 1.5 hours. Please arrive on time or early for your appointment to ensure that we will have sufficient time to prepare your return. If you arrive more than 15 minutes late for your appointment, we reserve the right to give your appointment to a walk-in.

Location: All clinics will take place at the UNC School of Law in Room 3031. The rightmost door on the parking lot side of the building should be open to the public. From there you will see signs directing you to the VITA clinic.

Parking: Free parking is available in the adjacent lots weekdays after 5 p.m. and all day on the weekends, except for the possibility of a UNC basketball (or other sports) game where the lot may be closed or require payment. Even if there is an event attendant in the lot, you may be able to park if you tell the attendant that you are here for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance clinic. However, we cannot guarantee parking during these times.

Foreign Students and Scholars: Some of our volunteers are certified to prepare nonresident returns (1040NR or 1040NR-EZ) for foreign students and scholars. If you require a nonresident US tax return and wish to use to our services, pleaseemail Hannah Smith to inquire about our capacity. Please be advised that we can only accept a limited number of returns due to the fact that not all volunteers are certified in this area. If we are unable to prepare your return, please seek assistance from the Office of International Students.

Please see our FAQs for additional information.
