SBA will be sending out a monthly e-mail newsletter with information about upcoming events and important announcements. I encourage all of you to read this monthly newsletter. We will post additional information about upcoming events and announcements on the SBA Website. 1L Announcements

Important Dates:

  • Campaign period opens Today, Monday, September 14 at 7 p.m.
  • Candidates Forum: Wednesday September 16 at 12 p.m. in Rotunda
  • Primary Election (if necessary): Thursday, September 17, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
  • First Year Election: Tuesday, September 22, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Please come out to the candidates forum to hear the future plans from the candidates before you vote!

Upcoming Events

Allocations Meeting held on Sunday, September 27 in room 4004, from 12:00-4:00 p.m. - after attending the Treasurer's Meeting, the next step in the process to receive SBA money is to request funds. If your organization would like to make a funding and budget request for the Fall term you MUST attend this meeting. Each individual organization will receive a time allotment of approximately 15-20 minutes to present your request to the SBA board. Individual groups are NOT required to attend for the full time, only for the time slot assigned to your organization. In order to be assigned a time slot, all funding requests are due no later than September 23 by 5 p.m. to me (

3L Class Gift Fundraising

Attention 3Ls- Mark your calendars for October 7, 2015, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Come out to the Carolina Club that evening to enjoy complimentary drinks and appetizers while you learn about the 3L Class Gift Campaign. The kickoff reception will include remarks from UNC Law Director of Annual Giving, as well as an explanation of how to contribute to the class gift. Any questions about the event can be answered by 3L Class President, Rachel Morgan.

Student Organizations

Student Organization Recognition: Deadline September 23, 2015

SBA is thrilled to announce the new way to recognize outstanding student organizations.

The Student Bar Association is sponsoring a monthly competition to recognize outstanding student organizations at Carolina Law. The Student Organization of the Month Award is aimed at recognizing the hard work and contributions of student organizations at the law school. Whether through exceptional pro bono projects, interesting events, successful meetings, increased membership, or any other unique programming; these organizations are making a meaningful difference in the Carolina community. All you have to do to nominate a student organization for this award is write a short paragraph of no more than 500 words on why the organization should win. The winning organization will be recognized on our Student Bar Association website and social media outlets, as well as receive bulletin board space on the SBA board by the student lockers to advertise about their organization. The application can be found online at The deadline for submitting for the October recognition is 12:00 p.m. on September 23.

The SBA will also fund groups who clean the dining area. Groups can sign up on the Google Doc available at Clean Up Sign Up. Sign-ups are first come first serve, and groups will receive $25 for each cleaning. Notify Meghan Boyd at


Student organizations that have unexpected costs arise during the semester can request emergency funds from the SBA by filling out the Emergency Budget Request Form available from SBA's Budget Forms. You must send the completed form and a copy of your SAFO general ledger to SBA Treasurer Meghan Boyd ( at least 48 hours in advance of a meeting of the SBA Board of Governors for your request to be considered.

SBA also offers seed money, which is essentially a no-interest loan from the SBA that can be allocated to help group fundraising efforts. Seed money received from the SBA must be repaid within a designated period. The application process for seed money is the same as the process for emergency funding requests.

Student Activity Fee Committee

The Student Activity Fee Committee allocates funds received from the Student Activity Fee. To apply for funding please fill out the Student Activity Fee Request Form.

UNC Student Congress

Student organizations can apply for funding from Student Congress, the Legislative Branch of Student Government on the main campus. For information about how to apply for funding from Congress please visit

GPSF Senate

Student organizations can apply for funding from the Graduate and Professional Student Federation, the umbrella graduate and professional student government organization on campus. For information on how to apply, please visit the website of the GPSF Appropriations Committee.

GPSF Travel Awards

The Graduate and Professional Student Federation sponsors travel awards to cover conference and research travel expenses for individual graduate and professional students as well as groups of graduate and professional students in the following categories:

  • Masters or professional students attending a conference
  • Doctoral, masters, or professional students attending a conference to present a paper / poster or to serve as a discussant, session chair or invited panelist
  • Doctoral, masters, or professional students traveling to another institution for research purposes
  • Groups of doctoral, masters or professional students attending an academic competition
