Dear Fellow Classmates,

It has been my honor to serve as your SBA President this past year. I believe this year's SBA worked hard on your behalf; representing your interests with the Administration and being an advocate on issues that directly benefit your law school experience.

Please take a moment to review the 2008-09 SBA Annual Report outlining the work your Board members and Committee members worked on throughout the year. This report is available on the SBA website ( or directly at:

I would like to thank all those who served on SBA Committees this year. At times, the work required significant time commitments, but your efforts always were in the interest of your classmates.

The 2009-10 SBA Board of Governors has now transitioned into office, and on behalf of the entire 2008-09 SBA Board, we wish you all the best!

Upcoming Events

SBA Open Forum - TODAY (4/14) at Noon in the Boardroom
The new SBA Board will hold its first meeting on Tuesday, April 14th, at noon in the Boardroom. The first half of the meeting will be an open forum for students. Come tell the SBA Board about your thoughts, ideas, and concerns and help us plan for the 2009-2010 school year.

SBA in the Rotunda - Tomorrow - Wednesday (4/15) from 12-12:30

  • Come meet the new SBA Board of Governors
  • Honor this year's Winston Crisp Award Recipient
  • Pie in the Face Day!
  • Bid and throw a pie in the face of outgoing SBA President Matt Modell (highest bid will be matched by Adjunct Professor Norma Houston and will benefit CPILO)
  • Also, bid and throw pies in the faces of Dean Kelly Podger Smith and Dean Michael States.

3L Announcements

Class Gift:
Online Donations to the Class of 2009 Gift: The "Miss Betty" Degraffenried Building Fund
If you have not yet given to the class gift, please do so online! You can make a gift (or a pledge to give) by going to the following link: There will be a list of various giving "methods" (including sending a check now, making a pledge to pay over the next five years, etc). If you click on one of the methods, it will take you to another screen with a drop-down menu where you will be able to select "Class of 2009 Miss Betty Fund." To date, only a little over 10% of our class has given, so PLEASE CONSIDER MAKING A CONTRIBUTION.

For those who RSVPed.The Advancement Office is hosting a "3L Celebration" on Tuesday, April 14th with a barbecue in the Rotunda and Courtyard at 4:30pm, followed by a UNC baseball game (UNC v. High Point University) at 6:00pm. Students can get into the baseball game with their One Cards, and the Advancement Office purchased a block of general admission seats for any guests. The 3L Class will also be tabling for the class gift at this event.

3L Information Session - Wednesday April 15 from 12:30-1 in 5052:
There will be a brief 3L Information Session to tell you everything you need to know about email accounts, lockers, etc. in preparation for graduation.

"Guest-Bartending" Fundraiser at The Crunkleton on April 15th:
The 3L Class is raising money for the Class of 2009 Gift by hosting a "Guest Bartending" event at The Crunkleton this Wednesday, April 15th from 7:00-10:00pm. (It's the last day of classes!!) Dean Kelly Podger Smith and Dean Michael States will serve as "guest-bartenders" along with two of The Crunkleton's own bartenders. All of the bartenders' tips during the event will go toward the "Miss Betty" Degraffenreid Building Fund. ALL STUDENTS are invited and encouraged to attend!

Cap and Gown Pick-up:
Thursday, April 30, from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm, a representative from Herff Jones will be on site to deliver Cap and Gown rentals to members of the 3L class. You must pick up your Cap and Gown on this day. If you are not able to pick up your materials, please have a friend pick up your regalia for you. (NOTE: The originally scheduled date of April 23 was moved by the vendor.)

Graduation Weekend Barbeque:
On Saturday, May 9th, the 3L Class is hosting a barbeque on the front lawn of the law school from noon until 2:00 pm for all members of the Class of 2009, their family and friends. Allen & Sons BBQ will be served along with vegetarian meal options. If you have not purchased tickets, you may do so at the event. All tickets, including 3L student tickets, will be $5.00 on the day of the event.

Graduation Ceremony:
The Commencement ceremony will be held at the Smith Center on Sunday, May 10th. The ceremony will begin at 5:00 pm and should be finished by 6:45 pm. However, all members of the Class of 2009 must report to the Smith Center by 3:30 pm! A reception will be held immediately following the ceremony in the School of Law Rotunda.
