Student Bar Association (SBA) Newsletter

Student Bar Association Newsletter: Monday, November 3, 2008

The Canned Food Drive has been extended until Wednesday, November 5th!

With the weather cooling down, and the slow economy, your generosity is needed more now than ever. Please bring in canned goods to help those with the greatest need. The number of cans donated this year is at an all-time low. The SBA Public Service Committee needs your help in supporting the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina. So please bring in cans! You may place your non-perishable donations in the appropriate boxes in the Rotunda. (You've seen them at the top of the stairs leading to the Rumpus Room.)

Cash donations will also be accepted (every $1 donated will be considered the equivalent to two cans) and may be turned into any SBA Board Member, as well as SBA Public Service Representatives, Sonal Raja and Vivian Intermont.

And if helping the hungry isn't enough incentive, the 1L Colleges are competing against each other for an Ice Cream Party, and the 2L and 3L Classes are competing against each other for a Biscuit Breakfast! So please bring in cans! There are only a few days left.

SBA Elections

Finance Committee
Last year, students via a referendum voted to significantly increase student fees. As a result, a Committee that includes three students is being formed to make decisions on funding requests for student travel, and other special event requests. If you are interested in being considered for this Committee, please go to to download the application.

The application is due by 5pm on Monday November 10. The Committee will meet every other week to set policies and make funding decisions, as required.

Curriculum Committee
The University is currently reviewing the UNC School of Law Curriculum and making recommendations for adoption on issues including the 1L Curriculum, writing requirements, and future courses offered. The Committee meets weekly on Mondays at 10am for an hour and additional meetings are possible. Strong candidates must be willing to meet this frequently, be committed to serve the entire year, and if you are not a 3L, the Committee's work may continue next year.

Applications are available at and are due by 5pm this Friday, November 7.

Upcoming Public Service Events

Eve Carson Memorial 5K for Education
The First Annual 5K to honor former Student Body President Eve Carson and to support her passion for education is being held on Saturday November 15 at 10am. Please join your fellow law students in participating in this event.

There are three easy ways to sign-up: 1) Every Wednesday from 12-1 the SBA Table in the Rotunda has sign-up forms available and we will mail in your form and $15 check so you can save the postage. 2) Sign-up forms are also available in a manilla envelope on the SBA Bulletin Board near the 4th Floor Lockers. You can mail your form in, or turn in your sign-up form and check to the SBA Mailbox (below the 2L mailboxes) or turn in your sign-up form and check to the SBA Table on Wednesday from 12-1. 3) You can go to to register or download a registration form (The law school team name is simply UNC School of Law).

One Student One Gift Campaign
The Annual One Student One Gift Campaign is about to begin! The goal of One Student One Gift is for students and the various student organizations at UNC Law to unify and reach out to meet the needs of the community during the holiday season.

The SBA Public Service Committee will be soliciting ideas for what cause the funds should go to and will be making a decision shortly. Please check out our table in the rotunda November 10 - November 21 to pledge a donation. We will be collecting donations through January 16th.

C-PILO Auction
The Carolina Public Interest Law Organization (C-PILO) is seeking donations for our Silent and Live Auctions. This year's auction will be held on January 29, 2009 at the Carolina Club. Thanks to the help of donors like you, 2008's Auction and Benefit raised over $18,000. We would love your help in making 2009's auction the most successful event yet!

Anything and everything is a possibility -- from baby-sitting services or swim lessons to vacation homes and backstage passes to concerts. Virtually every dollar we raise in the auction goes to grants for students working in unpaid public interest jobs in Summer 2009. In this struggling economy, many more students are going to be working in unpaid positions and it is imperative that we help provide this important opportunity. No donation is too small; the more creative, the better. Any donation you can provide will go toward helping a fellow Carolina Law classmate fund a summer work experience.

Please complete the form below and return it to the C-PILO mailbox by Friday, November 21, or email Sarah Long at with donations or questions.
