Student Bar Association (SBA) Newsletter

Student Bar Association Newsletter: Monday, January 12, 2015

On behalf of the entire SBA Board of Governors, I want to welcome you back to school. I hope that everyone had an enjoyable break. I know that many of you were busy volunteering your free time doing pro bono work, including the amazing group that participated in the winter break pro bono trip. This is a great tradition, and I am thrilled that we as students continue our commitment to public service.

SBA had a busy fall semester. We have worked to provide two new microwaves, created a community wall where all student organization can have access to commonly needed supplies, and created the Student Organization of the Month award. SBA also focused on improving communication with students through attending the Presidents’ Council meetings, utilizing social media, white boards, and sending this monthly newsletter. Last semester the SBA allocated thousands of dollars to student organizations to aid these groups in accomplishing a variety of events, including film screenings, lunchtime panels with distinguished guest speakers, and networking socials. The SBA also hosted four professor roundtables this past semester, these included Professor Myers, Professor Eichner, Doug Edmunds, and Vanda Chou. The SBA also hosted the Second Annual Softball Tournament, collected funds for the Holiday Angel, and hosted a finals time study break. Moreover, the work that some of our SBA Committees accomplished this past fall was tremendous.

Although the fall semester was a productive one for the SBA, we will continue working for you this semester. The SBA will continue to host professor roundtables, advocate for a more diverse student body and faculty, and work with administration to improve the overall atmosphere at UNC Law. Furthermore, the SBA will work on creating a better system for organizations to keep safe their belongings and funds. As always please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions, concerns or ideas. You can email me at or you can contact any SBA member. Our contact information, including information for the SBA Committees is available at

C-PILO Annual Auction and Benefit

The annual Carolina Public Interest Law Organization Auction will be held January 29, 2015, at 7 p.m., in the Great Room at Top of the Hill in Chapel Hill. The auction, a signature Carolina Law event since 1997, includes heavy hors d’oeuvres, cash bar, both silent and live auctions, as well as door prizes and special giveaways for guests. Proceeds fund grants for law students who are working in summer positions in public interest.

Last year, the auction raised $18,000 by bidding out items including a Great Smoky Mountains getaway, Outer Banks resort stay, camping expedition rental, slope tickets to the Appalachian Ski Resort and a trip for four to Disney World. This year, students are partnering with local businesses to include such items such as gift certificates for wine tastings, white water rafting, and performances at the American Dance Festival, as well as tickets to the Carolina Ballet and to various N.C. sporting events.
