Student Bar Association (SBA) Newsletter

Student Bar Association Newsletter: Monday, January 12, 2009

Fellow classmates,

On behalf of the entire SBA Board of Governors, I wanted to welcome you back to school. I hope everyone had an enjoyable winter break. I know many of you were busy volunteering your free time doing pro bono work, including the great group that went to New Orleans for an entire week. This is a great tradition, and am thrilled that it has continued.

SBA had a busy fall semester. We have worked hard to improve campus safety through the T-Lot shuttle and more lighting on Country Club Road. We have made bar review more affordable, helped our student organizations become more organized, better prepared for leadership transitions, and have provided more opportunities for them to raise funds than ever before. SBA has also focused efforts to improve daily student life by offering 24-hour printing, a 50 percent increase in printing money, a new refrigerator, six new microwaves, a toaster oven, and the men's bathrooms' no longer smell. The work that some of our Committees have done has been tremendous.  SBA has worked hard to improve communication with this monthly newsletter, our encouragement that CSO play a more proactive role in getting information to students, and the SBA bylaw and Constitution changes we have made will help secure the future of the law school and SBA.

We promise to continue working for you this semester, and as always, please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions, concerns or ideas. You can email us at, or feel free to email any of us directly. Our contact info, including info for the SBA Committees is available at

T-Lot Shuttle

The T-Lot shuttle is again running on demand Monday - Thursday from 5 - 9 p.m.

The shuttle driver is stationed either in the Rotunda or in the van located by the flag pole in the parking lot. Rain or shine, we encourage you to take advantage of this great service!

We hope that this revised schedule will allow students who leave the law school after dark to feel safer when traveling to the T-Lot, not to mention making the T-Lot a more convenient place to park!

Upcoming Public Service Events

One Student One Warm Gift
The SBA Public Service Committee will be collecting monetary donations from law students, faculty and staff that will be used to purchase coats, hats, and gloves for children in the Chapel Hill and Durham area. Considering the economic hardship many families currently face, your donations will help keep children warm this season.

UNC Law will be partnering with the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools and Durham Public Schools to provide 200 students with warm clothing this winter.  Area public schools have identified students in need and your donation will go to purchasing coats, gloves and hats for those elementary and middle school students. Please stop by our table in the rotunda between Monday, January 12th and Friday, January 23rd during the lunch hour to make a donation.

If you have questions please contact Sonal Raja at or Vivian Intermont at

C-PILO Annual Auction and Benefit
Come to the Carolina Club on Thursday, January 29 for an evening of fun and fundraising! Silent Auction begins at 6:00 pm. Live Auction begins at 7:30 pm.

We have a lot of wonderful items, including: airline tickets, a Bahamas getaway, an Italy getaway, and many others in NC and beyond. Also up for auction are UNC basketball and football tickets, gift certificates to local businesses, lunches and dinners with faculty and staff, and much much more!

Proceeds will go to summer grants for students who take public interest jobs.

If you are interested in volunteering or have any last minute donations, email Sarah Long at

The Auction is always a fun night to spend time with friends, dress up a little, and support a great cause at the same time. We hope to see you there!
