Article I: Name
Section 1. The name of this organization shall be Hispanic / Latino Law Students' Association
Article II: Purpose
Section 1. The purpose of this organization shall be to 1) enhance the legal careers of its members, 2) increase Hispanic-Latino representation at Carolina Law, and 3) serve the Hispanic Latino community of the Research Triangle Area.
Article III: Membership
Section 1. Membership and participation is open to all law students and undergraduates from any major interested in attending law school.
Section 2. Membership and participation in this organization is open to all students without regard to age, gender, race, color, national origin, religion, disability, veteran status, or sexual orientation.
Article IV: Officers
Section 1. President. The president of this organization must be at least a second year law student at Carolina Law. The President shall be elected for a term of one academic year. The President cannot be reelected, unless there are no other candidates for the position.
Section 2. Vice-President. Any member is eligible to run for the Vice-Presidency. The Vice-President cannot be reelected, unless there are no other candidates for the position.
Section 3. Secretary. Any member is eligible to run for this office. The Secretary cannot be reelected, unless there are no other candidates for the position.
Section 4. Treasurer. Any member is eligible to run for this office. Treasurer may be reelected.
Article V: Elections
Section 1. There shall be elections for all officers listed under Article IV of this bylaws, except for Secretary, at the last official meeting of the academic year.
Section 2. Officers shall be elected by a majority of votes. The candidate with most votes shall be the winner.
Section 3. The Secretary shall be elected at the first official meeting of the academic year.
Article VI: Handling of Funds
Section 1. The Treasurer shall be the primary officer designated to handle organization finances.
Article VII: Amendments
Section 1. These Bylaws may be amended by a majority of votes at the last official meeting of the academic year.
Section 2. Any member may propose amendments to these bylaws.
Article VIII: Membership Dues
Section 1. Members agree to pay a membership fee, in the amount decided upon by the current Executive Board, in order to provide funding necessary to the administrative operation of the organization.
Section 2. The amount to be paid by members as membership is reviewable by a simple majority vote (50% + 1) of the membership at the last meeting of the Spring semester.
Article IX: Co-sponsorhips
Section 1. Co-sponsorship of other organizations' events requires a majority vote of the membership (50% + 1).
Section 2. Donation of funds to other organizations' events requires a supermajority vote of the membership (2/3)
Section 3. Where time constraints make it unreasonable to obtain a vote from the entire membership, the president shall have the authority to bind the organization to co-sponsorships as well as donation of funds subject to the approval of all the other officers.
