Networking Dinner:

On behalf of the Environmental Law Project (ELP) at the University of North Carolina School of Law, it was our pleasure to hold the first annual Environmental Law Career Night on March 7th, 2007. It was our please to hold the second in the series recently in 2008!

The purpose of the Environmental Law Career Night was to inform students about the many career paths that environmental lawyers may take.  Attorneys informally introduced themselves, briefly explained their career path and mingled with students.

An informal dinner was served and resumes were distributed.

Environmental Lobbying Panel

Environmental lobbyists shared their work behind the scenes to educate lawmakers and advance their organizations' positions at the N.C. General Assembly.

The panelists offered students a discussion about the factors they use in deciding which initiatives to push, how they collaborate and strategize with other organizations, what role their organization typically assumes in the legislative process, and any "war stories" they've had!

Panelists:

  • David Knight
General Counsel for the Nature Conservancy
  • Ben Hitchings
North Carolina American Planning Association Legislative Chair (NCAPA)
  • Robin Smith

ELP's Environmental Law Symposium:

On Saturday, February 3, 2007, the Environmental Law Project sponsored a symposium as part of the Festival of Legal Learning.  Professors Donald Hornstein and Maria Savasta-Kennedy of the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Law presented a program dedicated to exploring current topics in environmental law relevant to North Carolina. Specific topics were: red wolf reintroduction, mercury contamination, regional air quality issues and mega-landfills. It was a great way to earn CLE credit as well as learn about the most current environmental issues in our state!
